Bekkers Petit Chablis 2023 x 6
Product Description
Bekkers Wine is the winemaking project of respected
viticulturist Toby Bekkers and his French born wife and
winemaker Emmanuelle. It is no secret that they aspire for
the Bekkers red wines to be a fine-wine emblem for McLaren
Vale.
2023 Bekkers Petit Chablis
The McLaren Vale climate that so well suits Grenache and
Shiraz limits our ability to produce a white wine of similar
calibre. Since 2012 we have made our white wine in
Chablis, France for release in Australia. It’s a great excuse
for Emmanuelle to return to her native home and her love of
Chardonnay from Burgundy.
While I appreciate a glass (or maybe a bottle) of Meursault
‘Charmes’, Puligny Montrachet ‘Les Combettes’ or a good
Rully from La Cote Chalonnaise; it’s the purity of
Chardonnay from Chablis that most captures my attention. I
wanted our white wine offering to reflect a sense of this
special place: purity and clarity.”
Emmanuelle Bekkers
Chardonnay for the Bekkers Petit Chablis is harvested from
the plateau behind the village of Beines. The grapes are
pressed within an hour of harvest to a stainless-steel
fermenter. The juice is cold-settled and racked clear within
48 hours. Natural fermentation at cold temperatures is
followed by natural malolactic fermentation. The wine spent
3 months on fine lees without any agitation before bottling.
Unoaked.
Wine style objective: Freshness, zippy citrus acidity,
minerality. Lifted aromas of white flowers, citrus zest and
apple supported by middle-palate softness. Freshness with a
lightness that compliments flavours of lime or grapefruit zest.
It finishes with the signature stony minerality of the Chablis
terroir.
2023 was a warmer vintage with a large potential yield
which required careful mitigation. Those that contained
production in the vineyard produced generous, ripe wines
that still retain some of the essential “Chablis minerality and
acidity”.
The warmer season has resulted in a 2023 Petit Chablis that
combines classic mineral tension with added generosity and
texture. Terrific drinking for an Australian summer.
