Skillogalee Estate Shiraz 2022 x 6
The 2022 Estate Shiraz, crafted from carefully harvested grapes grown on low-yielding, dry-grown vines from the Skillogalee estate's wooded hills, showcases the unique character of the Clare Valley. Planted in the 1970s, many of these cool climate vines are now over 50 years old, yielding less fruit but producing a more flavourful and structurally complex wine. After basket pressing, the wine was matured for 16 months in 100% French oak hogsheads before being blended into its final composition.
This Shiraz, with its deep and intense ruby red hue, presents a complex, layered bouquet featuring dark fruit like blackberry and black cherry, spices like pepper and cloves, and subtle hints of earthiness. On the palate, dark berry flavours of plum skin and fennel seed spice are embraced by a plush, silky mid-palate and a long, finely structured tannin finish. Stunning and vibrant for immediate enjoyment, this wine will also reward careful cellaring for over a decade.
Vintage
The 2022 vintage in Clare Valley produced consistently high-quality wines across both red and white varieties. A cool, dry summer and early autumn provided ideal ripening conditions, delivering fruit with excellent natural acidity and full varietal flavours. Despite a late start due to a cool spring and summer, red varieties showed remarkable quality, with optimal flavour ripeness achieved before harvest. Although there was isolated frost and poor fruit set, the region avoided significant weather damage.
