The wine is concentrated and silken, with a flow and ebb in the mouth that speaks volumes to the
pedigree of fruit resource and clever handling in the winery.
Bekkers Wine is the winemaking project of respected viticulturist Toby
Bekkers and his French-born wife and winemaker Emmanuelle. Few
can claim a more extensive understanding of McLaren Vale.
"Nothing we have seen overseas has diminished our conviction that
McLaren Vale is capable of producing unique, world-class wines and
we aim to be an emblem for the region.”
2020 Bekkers, McLaren Vale Syrah
Our quest to create a fine wine beacon for McLaren Vale means attention to
the smallest details. Vineyard parcels are selected from our ‘artist’s palette’- the
landscape of McLaren Vale- to capture aromatic spice, elegance and soft,
silky texture; all underpinned by the generous flavours of McLaren Vale.
Shiraz is McLaren Vale’s most widely planted variety for a reason. The best
examples transcend the stereotype and are world-class wines showing restraint,
spice and fragrance with a capacity to age gracefully.
Variety: 100% Syrah (Shiraz).
Full bodied. Opaque. Aromatic, fragrant. Plum, blackberry fruit teamed with a
savoury quality that brings umami richness and depth of flavour.
A blend of four vineyards. Clarendon and Seaview sub regions.
In the cellar, an average of 21% whole bunches are added to the fermenter
and the remaining fruit is gently destemmed (not crushed) and sorted to
remove any shrivelled berries. Cold soaked for 3 to 5 days prior to the
beginning of natural fermentation (no yeast added.) Gentle, cool fermentation
minimises over-extraction. Basket pressed to oak after 15-20 days fermentation.
Matured in a mixture of new (55%) and older (45%) French oak puncheons
(500L). Aged on fine lees with minimal sulphur additions. Bottled December
2021 sans filtration. Screw cap | 14.2% abv.
We believe that the textural element holds the key to fine wine.
